Mirror Friendship Bracelets- Made to Order

I’ve had a couple of mirror-embellished friendship bracelets in my shop for a while, but I recently decided to add the quirky, shiny bracelets to my collection of personalised friendship bracelets! Just like with my other custom-made bracelets, you get to pick a pattern and a colour scheme, then the finished hand-made bracelet will be decorated with tiny mirror squares. I actually took these pieces from an unwanted old miniature disco ball!

Here are a couple of pictures jsut to give you an idea:

Why Handmade Is Better

All of the jewellery in my Etsy shop, Seri Marea Jewellery, is handmade, and that’s something I’m very proud of. But why? Handmade items are time consuming and often made on a very small scale, meaning that the prices will be higher than those of mass-produced items. So why is handmade still better?

First of all, there’s the ethical reasons. On a site like Etsy, you can buy beautiful jewellery, clothes and homewares without worrying about where they came from. You know that no sweatshop labour was involved, and that workers were paid fair wages- because in most cases, they picked those wages themselves. You don’t have to be an active campaigner for labour rights to appreciate that this is a very significant difference. Take the opportunity to make a little bit of a difference!

Then there’s more selfish reasons. When you buy from a small-scale, independent handmade producer, chances are that you’ll get better service. This person is really invested in everything they make, and that will probably come across in extra attention to detail. For example, all my jewellery is packaged in handmade boxes, with a little hand-written thank you note. How often would you get that from a large-scale retailer of mass-produced goods? With any half-decent handmade seller, you’ll also be able to contact them personally about any problems. All in all, it really shows when a product means more than just a way of making money.

Buying handmade goods also means that they will be unusual, special, and often completely unique. It’s not like buying a dress from a chain fashion store, where you know there’s a good chance one of your friends will have the same dress! There might even be the opportunity to customise the item, or have something designed for you completely from scratch- this is actually something I specialise in, with my personalised friendship bracelets. Buying handmade goods from independent retailers gives you a chance to show your own sense of style rather than just following high street trends!

Finally, there’s just something special about anything handmade. Each little lump and bump reflects all the love and care that went into making it. You know that the item in your hands was made by someone who really loves to create, and that it’s unique- something just for you.

Surely all that is worth a little extra money?

This Week’s Favourites

It’s been quite a while since I put one of these posts together! In future, I’ll try to be a lot more regular and get something up every week.

To start off- 23 important life lessons from Toddlers in Tiaras! This made me laugh so much!

Jewellery

If you like big, bold statement necklaces, then this DIY collar necklace tutorial will be great for you!

And some more DIY ideas- bracelets made out of zips!

Beauty & Fashion

Findation- this brilliant site lets you know what foundation shades will work for you based on brands you already know. I haven’t tested the accuracy of their matches yet, but it seems like such a good idea!

DIY salt spray- I made my own version of this just the other day, and it works beautifully! Definitely worth trying if you like messy, beachy hair.

Recipes

I haven’t tried it yet, but this proscuttio, mozzarella and fig pizza sounds delicious!

As for things I have made, I recently made delicious mock duck and mushroom pasties- I cooked the mock duck in the reserve liquid from cooking dried porcini mushrooms, with a little bit of bouillon powder added. Then I mixed it with sauteed onions and garlic, chestnut mushrooms and the porcini, along with a touch of oregano and plenty of seasoning. It tasted amazing with my homemade rough puff pastry!

Views of Florence

It’s been a little while since I published anything- because I was away in Florence! I had an absolutely brilliant time; Florence is an incredibly beautiful city, and I was lucky enough to get guided tours of various churches and galleries from my lecturers.

I also managed to get lots of views of Florence from a height- some of these photos are from close to the church of San Miniate al Monte, some are from the nearby hilltop town of Fiesole, and some are from the top of the Duomo (cathedral).

Personalised Friendship Bracelets

I don’t normally get round to photographing my personalised friendship bracelets before I send them off, but this time I did! Here’s an order of three personalised candystripe friendship bracelets. They were made exactly to request, right down to the precise colour shades and width.

This Week’s Favourites

I skipped last week just because I was so busy, so it’s time for an extra-big mid-week post! Enjoy a bit of Boxing Day reading!

Fashion & Beauty

I absolutely love this DIY cropped silk singlet- definitely worth trying out! And if you like this, then you might like my DIY fashion tutorials post as well.

This is kind of crazy, but I like it anyway- Diamond eyeliner jewellery. Does anyone else agree with me, or is sticking tiny diamonds to your eyelids just plain ridiculous?

Nothing particularly new or exciting, but still helpful- 10 common beauty mistakes and how to avoid them – also see Part 2

I’m always on the lookout for new online clothing shops, and this week, I came across Lily Boutique. There’s some really lovely things!

Food

On Friday, I was lucky enough to be treated to a delicious lunch at Vanilla Black near Chancery Lane, London, and I definitely reccommend it to anyone else who happens to be in the area! It’s a vegetarian restaurant, but not like any other vegetarian food you’ve ever tried! Each dish was a complete surprise, and everything I tried tasted amazing, if a little unusual.

Cute

Links

I don’t actually have an iPhone, but if I did, it would wear one of these- iPhone cases

You’ve probably already seen these underwater dog photos, but if not then they’re definitely worth a look!

The latest item to be uploaded to my Etsy store is in fact three items,  a set of tiny, delicate stacking bracelets! This isn’t just a one-off, either- the next set is already in production, and I hope to start offering personalised bracelet sets before long- a sort of jewellery pick-and-mix!

But for now, here’s the first bracelet set- neon pink thread with a seashell and tiny silver jumprings, rhinestones wrapped with ombre golden-brown thread, and plaited black and white fine thread.
